For Immediate Release
December 6, 2012
The Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) initiative is pleased to announce that the final round of their Tech-I 2012 Competition will take place from December 10-12, coinciding with the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Dubai, UAE. The top 30 ventures of the start-up competition were selected out of hundreds of entrants in a two-stage process, combining expert reviews and public participation through online voting. Representatives of these 30 companies as well as several alumni of past GIST activities will join the GIST team in Dubai for three days of training, mentorship, and pitching. The competition will culminate in an awards ceremony where the 10 most promising ventures will receive prizes including grants, long-term mentoring, and participation in a Silicon Valley accelerator course.
On Monday, December 10, the entrepreneurs sponsored by GIST will partake in day of activities co-sponsored by our partner organization in the region, N2V (National Net Ventures). After a morning session of mentoring and pitching practice for GIST participants, the afternoon will feature a series of workshops open to the public designed to offer guidance for aspiring entrepreneurs in the startup process. The evening will conclude with a welcoming reception following the training.
The Summit opens on Tuesday, December 11th and GIST participants will attend keynote sessions throughout the day while they take turns pitching their companies in front of judging panels. The top 10 winners will be announced by the end of the day, and those entrepreneurs will prepare to present again on Wednesday, December 12 for prize consideration. The final judging panel will occur the morning of the 12th in an open session, and in the afternoon GIST will be partnering with Startup Youth and the U.S. Department of State Office of Global Youth Issues to offer three related panel sessions for Summit attendees called the “Young Entrepreneur Forum.” The GIST Tech-I Competition will conclude with a public awards ceremony and closing reception for invited guests.
CRDF Global President, Cathy Campbell, extends her congratulations to the Tech-I finalists and welcomes Summit attendees to learn more about the GIST program. She explains: “Through GIST, CRDF Global connects people who, though they may live across the globe, speak the same language – people who believe in the power of entrepreneurship and the power of young and dynamic innovators to improve their communities, countries, and regions. It is no accident that the United Arab Emirates is graciously hosting the Summit this year. This is a country committed to growing entrepreneurship not only within its borders but throughout the region.”
The GIST initiative works to build entrepreneurial ecosystems in 44 countries across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa by identifying, coaching, funding most promising entrepreneurs through its competitions, start-up acceleration services, online social media platforms and interactive mentorship programs. The GIST Initiative is implemented by CRDF Global and funded by the U.S. Department of State.
